About Experiential Video 3

This video process includes one process: Expressing.
Key Concepts:
- Now that you have practiced Yes Breath and Welcoming Experience + Emotional Literacy, you’re experiencing yourself more deeply. You have begun to create a new habit of moving your body and breathing, and checking in to discover how you are inside. You are enjoying your breathing more and more often. Experiencing is nourishing, and a way of collecting all of your attention into you.
- Consider experiencing and expressing as two endpoints on a single line. In Experiential Video 3, we’ll explore the other end of the continuum, which is expressing. Expressing through movements and sounds is a way to move your energy through you, including any backlog of energy from the past that is stuck. Anything which has been suppressed creates a backlog of energy. Expressing offers the possibility of flow-through to relief, release and a feeling of lightness or freedom. Eventually through expressing you will discover how expressing is a way to move energy through you to completion, so that you don’t recycle old emotions. Not recycling the same old emotions correlates to not recycling the same old problems, stories, and learning opportunities. Good news, eh? As you move energy through you to completion, you become available for what is happening in the present moment and increasingly available to creative possibilities.
- Note – there is a difference between expressing and venting. Venting is about offloading energy, often in an unconscious way, i.e. distraction, or in a blameful way. Venting, distracting and blaming do not include your full presence as the energy moves through or enhance your ability to respond and create in your life. Without your awareness when you vent, you may actually enable a difficult situation or negative energy to continue. However, expressing is about releasing the energy you are experiencing consciously, in a friendly way. Your presence as you express reweaves your inner energetic experience.
- Expressing your energy and making it bigger will eventually move you to a playful state. You know you are no longer “caught” in an old drama or story when you begin to feel playful. Play is a sign that the energy is moving through to completion.
- As you practice expressing you may discover more about your experience and how you are, and you will eventually understand your energy and emotions better. However, don’t fall in the trap of thinking that your expressing should make sense or be rational. Expressing your energy isn’t meant to be rational; it’s meant to move your energy in a way that feels easeful to you and friendly to you. This is not a rational process! One of my favorite quotes is “Insight follows experience.” -- Kathryn Hendricks. You will organically understand yourself better as you fully experience and express the deep streams of energy inside you all the way through to completion. Insight will be organic vs. effortful and will arise in natural timing. If you are “trying” to understand, you are getting ahead of yourself.
- Invite and intend a circle of compassion around yourself as you explore expressing. Sometimes as you express, judgments may arise about what you are discovering inside you. You might have the thought that what you are experiencing or the way you are moving your body or using your voice is wrong or bad. As best you can, notice and allow the thought to move through, and gently redirect your attention back to your body sensations and the movements and sounds you want to make and that feel easeful and friendly to you.
- As you express, bring your curiosity. An open, curious attitude opens you for friendly and easeful discovery.
- Once you feel established in acceptance and compassion for yourself; as you express, explore bringing play to your expression.
Invitation to a New Reality:
As you express your present experience through movements and sounds, you discover a feeling of lightness in your energy field, a sense of release and the sensations of energy moving. You discover that you cannot predict or control what is at the other end of expressing a wave of your energy, and you open into a sense of relaxation and trust of your inner being as you align your inner experience with your authentic expression. You also experience increased vitality and new discoveries about yourself. This loop which includes experiencing and expressing becomes a beautiful weave of your inner life and your outer life which nourish and feed each other, resulting in a sense of wholeness -- You and the universe, the universe and you, dancing as one. You are neither holding onto nor resisting your expressing, but bringing loving presence to your experience as you express and release in a way that feels friendly to you.
Time for Reflection:
Other ways to express your energy and creativity in a non-cognitive way are to journal, doodle, sing, or draw a picture. You might write or doodle with your non-dominant hand. Remember, your expression doesn't have to "make sense." Jot down any noticings, including: How are you now? What did you learn? Did any inspirations or intuitions arise?
