This video includes one process: Emotional Literacy.
Key Concepts:
- In this video, you will build on what you have learned and practiced with Yes Breath and Welcoming Experience, which provide a foundation for the emotional literacy process in this video -- discovering specific feelings as they arise through your body sensations. This process is differentiated from thoughts about your feelings, which may or may not prove accurate when you tune into your body’s feeling zones. The Upanishads, a series of ancient Vedic texts, offer a map of a human being from the physical body through to energy, senses, wisdom and intuition, unconscious, and essence. Everything is connected and inter-related in human beings, including your feelings, which are directly connected with your body sensations. At the most fundamental level, the energy animating all feelings is the same beautiful life energy which animates everything. The practice shared in this video provides a way to directly experience your feelings as pure life energy. When you bring presence to allow space for your feelings just to be there, they dissolve or ‘flow through’ all the way to essence.
- When you tune into your body sensations as a pathway to your feelings, you open into presence. The practice of presence is very powerful: “Whenever you deeply accept this moment as it is – no matter what form it takes – you are still, you are at peace.” -- Eckhart Tolle. When you bring your open, curious presence to your feeling zones, your feelings pass through your presence and eventually completely dissolve. Conversely, labeling feelings as good or bad, positive or negative, spiritual or ego-ic before you directly presence creates a veil over direct experience, which inhibits transformative flow-through of feelings to completion: the clear open space of being in essence.
- A helpful metaphor for feelings is to imagine you have feeling pipes through your body. Feelings arise when they arise, and flow through the feeling pipes. Any suppressed or unreleased feelings stick in the pipes, creating a smaller opening or even a full blockage that affects ALL feelings. If you are new to noticing and being present with your feelings, when you first begin to open up to feelings you may experience A LOT of feelings. Through practice, eventually the backlogged feelings clear and you experience more and more easeful flow-through with feelings, enjoying the clear open space of essence through your feeling pipes more and more frequently.
- We all receive conditioning as children from our family of origin and from our culture about what inner experiences and feelings are considered appropriate and which ones are “wrong.” As you tune into your body sensations and core feelings, some of those conditioned patterns of judging, labeling and stopping feelings are likely to appear. Choosing again and again to simply presence your feelings is the practice which eventually becomes a new, healthy habit.
- The Feeling Zones, based on the work of the Hendricks Institute, provide a supportive place to start your exploration of your body sensations relationship to your core feelings:
- The Anger Zone – neck, shoulders, upper back.
- The Sadness Zone – throat and chest area.
- The Fear Zone – solar plexus and belly.
- Sexual Feelings – genitals and/or streaming feelings up and down the body.
- Joy and Happiness – heart area expansion and/or full body vitality.
When you notice both thoughts and feelings present, I invite you to prioritize your actual body experience, and direct your attention and energy into your body, especially from the neck down and into the feeling zones.
I invite you to journal for a few minutes each day after watching the video to record your discoveries.
Invitation to a New Reality:
Connecting breath, movement, and feelings awareness opens you to discover your specific feelings, creating a beautiful connection with your authentic experience. As you connect with your authentic experience in your body, you open to discover the gift of your feelings and experience, which emerges naturally through presence over time. As you connect inside more frequently, you create ease in tuning in, and experience a sense of wholeness and peace, and begin to discover your essence timing.
Time for Reflection:
When you feel complete, appreciate yourself for exploring, and consider making a few notes about your discoveries.
